At the turn of the century (last) I was hired on as a University of California, College of Agriculture, Agricultural Farm Advisor.
I was to wok out of the extension office in Stockton and was to bring the agricultural college to the farm community specializing in animal husbandry. I was raised on a diary and beef ranch located in the Chino Valley, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. As I drove up and down the country roads in San Joaquin County, I saw two or three 10 gallon milk cans at almost every mailbox. This was my first lesson in how small grade B diaries were operated. Milk from these small herds went to Sego in Galt, Kraft in Manteca, MPA in Stockton and Modesto.
It’s always in fashion for us voters to blame our state’s elected officials for the budget problems they deal with, or don’t deal with, every year. That makes sense, but when is the last time we took a hard look at ourselves? It’s far from fashionable to talk about personal responsibility and civic duty when the subject is ourselves. I’m excluding, of course, the always popular grousing about other people’s lack of responsibility. What is our own responsibility as voters for our state’s $17 billion budget deficit? That’s one of the big, but often ignored, questions posed by the Field Poll’s recent statewide survey of our attitudes toward taxes and budget cuts. Pollsters Mark DiCamillo and Mervin Field asked 1,052 of us if we wanted to tax ourselves or, if not, what state spending areas we wanted cut.

Town and Country Liquor & Deli is one of the few remaining stores doing business in Downtown Lockeford and wishes to welcome the publication of the Lockeford Clements News.
For our many faithful customers who are members of the Lockeford Historical Society, we find an article in the San Joaquin County Historical Society newsletter stating that in 1855, Luther Locke, his son Dr. Dean J. Locke and Dean’s bride; Delia Marcella Hammond arrived together in the Lockeford area.
In 1856, Luther Locke built a two story structure on the corner of Main Street (AKA Highway 88/12) and Locust Street (AKA Elliott Road).
The building was called “The White House” whereupon Locke sold general merchandise from the lower story.
In 1861, Luther converted the second floor in to a Post Office and became the towns first Postmaster.
